What is a new-item & slotting fees?

UNFI charges a new-item (slotting) fee for each SKU launched into a new distribution center. With 20+ DCs nationwide, launching broadly stacks up fast — roughly $500 per SKU per DC if you join UNFI's Annual Advertising Agreement (AAA), or about $1,200 per SKU per DC without it.

Brands also commonly face free-fill (free goods) requirements and a payment hold on the first PO — historically about 60 days.

Why does it happen?

Is it disputable?

Partly. Agreed launch fees are contractual, but charges for the wrong number of DCs, duplicate fees, or unauthorized SKUs are recoverable. Reconcile every fee to what you actually launched — the DC list in your launch agreement is the source of truth.

UNFI specifics: fees and timing

UNFI has commonly charged about $500 per SKU per new DC with an Annual Advertising Agreement (AAA), or ~$1,200 per SKU per DC without one, and applied a ~60-day payment hold on your first PO. AAA dues have run $1,920–$42,000 per quarter. Confirm current figures in your UNFI agreement.
